Die Landwirtschaft - der Eckpfeiler der kongolesischen Wirtschaft?

Image

Our little garden project/ unser Garten Projekt

Due to the harsh veggie situation we decided to plant. Thanks to wonderful parents we had lots of seeds. So far this is what we have:   DEU: Ohne Gemüse auf dem Markt müssen wir selbst anbauen. Hier was bisher wächst: The most popular of Congolese plants: THE Manioc /Cassava (which was actually planted by the Pygmy family that used to stay here) DEU: Die Lieblingsplanze der Kongolesen: Maniok  (Was bereits von der Pigmäen Familie angeplazt wurde bevor wir einzogen)  The first flower of our zucchini (only the female ones develop a fruit) /   die erste Zucchini Blume (nur die weiblichen Blüten werden zur Frucht) The carrot bed (what was left after the chicken attack) /   Das Karottenbeet (was nach der Hühnerattacke davon übrig ist) Our Papaya tree - also thanks to the Pygmy family - delicious with lime and v

The unfulfilled agricultural potential of Africa's giant

Image
Agriculture is the cornerstone of the Congolese economy and ‘employs’ three quarters of the working population. As the World Bank (WB) report phrases it: “Of all sources of growth, the agricultural sector has the greatest potential for poverty reduction.” With ample amount of sunshine and rainfall, why are the markets often so empty, only offering cassava, maize, rice, plantains and beans – literally!?! Cassava (Manioc) is the country's major food crop and is grown in all parts of the DRC – often claimed as their national dish, but actually quiet new. They make Fufu balls, chikwon (like a stick of bread made out of a thick glue) and ponde (a bitter tasting big leaf sort of spinach) out of it. Just like the Europeans took to the South-American potato, corn and cassava/manioc spread with the Portuguese arrival.   By the end of the 15th century the Mexican corn and the Brazilian cassava started their conquest of Congolese cuisine. The cooking banana/pl

nine chickens and no eggs / neun Huehner und kein Ei!?!

Image
I love our chickens.  I really do. We have nine of them now: Babara, Magareth, Heide, Ute, Baerbel, Renate, Iris, and the two " ameliorated " chickens. But they are not laying eggs. As expected. None today. We have had a lady make chicken food (i.e. food for the chickens, not of the chickens). I have worked hours to make them sit and sleep comfortably - but they seemingly not appreciate the effort. Chickens: Where are my eggs??? Schade.

Food Stuff

Image
The food situation in Mbandaka has been challenging. Surely it could be worse, but considering the amazing potential to grow just about anything, its been disappointing ... and expensive!  Before I arrived on the equator I had this preconceived notion that we would have ample amounts of fruits and vegetables. Most likely varieties I didn't know, but certainly plenty of them. Well, I was proven wrong ones again. My search for fruits has turned into the search for the holy grail. It almost seems like somebody is trying to keep you from it. For example: Mangos. the last weeks has been mango season and the fruits tree next door almost collapsed  under the amount of fruit on it. Yet mangos were nowhere to be found on any of Mbandaka's markets. None. Nada. Zip. Zero. Really none. The only fruit you will find regularly is banana and pineapple - at least so far. BUT... not like in Europe. Not perfect without brown spots and without dents. Most of the fruit here is slightly old (ti

Rollentausch - der Sturz Lumumbas als mein Held

Image

The influence of the west.... turning my world-view up side down - again

Image
Before I came to the DR Congo I was quick to blame the West, or as they like to call us here - the Occidental world - for all that is wrong in the developing countries. As with all black and white paintings the nuances of grey will eventually appear. One of the biggest revelation has been the lack of clear interference by the West - especially by my favorite antagonist - the United States of America. The first puzzle piece emerged with Gerard Prunier's: Africa's World War , in which he debunks some of the general "conspiracy theories involving the power of the Western powers" (usually the three enemies of the Congolese State were France, Belgium and the USA, not necessarily in this order). He starts, for example, with the lack of French Mining interest (p.127-129). The French had only two investments - one through the Belgian Union Minere and one with the Empain-Schneider group, but they certainly did not gain any economic benefits when Mobutu finally sited w
